Engineers in especially the Electrical Power, Energy and Utility Industries are faced with the challenge of managing aged infrastructure, paired with this is strong pressure, from management, to minimise operating costs. This has resulted in strong emphasis by companies on effective asset management and preventative maintenance. One of the components of asset management is maintenance. There are different maintenance strategies, but experience has revealed that condition based maintenance is an optimal strategy. Condition based maintenance requires thorough knowledge of the current condition of the asset, so as to be able to take maintenance decisions.
